We got snow and freezing temperatures last week. I haven't gotten all the carrots dug out if the garden. Since we have had week straight of rain before that everyone is having harvest troubles. This week is supposed to be cold but dry. I am looking forward to that and hopefully some sunshine. Sunshine makes the cold easier to deal with.

I've dug some of the carrots. This year I planted the seed heavy, managed to keep the weeds at Bay and thinned the seedlings once or twice. Lesson learned must be ruthless on the thinning. We got lots if little carrots, non bigger than three inches and the smaller. Oh well live and learn. Still better than last year.
While decluttering a shelf unit in my dinning room, I realised the wall mist be painted first. So in the middle of the decluttering, I stopped and have been painting the dark panneled wall. First primer then the grey color.

Before. Ignore mess

I'm so happy. I did a little section near the front door. But never finished. I didn't even move the twinkle lights. Today I did it the right way.
My dinning room is currently unusable, table is in the middle of the room, full of stuff.
But I can see the future. I'm happy to finally cross ''prime & paint dinning room" off my list!
We remodeled the kitchen, replaced the front and back exterior doors. We planted a garden, went way over budget, canceled plans, started painting. And just generally been busy. Oh and because I thought why not we are home most of the summer, let's be cat foster parents.

During and after our whirlwind four day remodeling. I was drained and overwhelmed. I couldn't find it to write here about the experience.
The kitchen we replaced the base cupboards with new shaker style white, and got a fantastic deal on display pieces of laminate counter tops. We installed new vinyl flooring and rearrange the stove and fridge. Opening up the space. I painted the walls a light grey like the laundry room. I primed the upper cabinets and celling. I have yet to finish painting.

The original exterior doors were super narrow. 25 and 28 inches. A standard door is minimal 32 inches. This door situation was the cause of most of the stress and extra money. The back door in the kitchen went fairly smoothly. Just had to remove the outdoor light. Which we handliy converted to a outdoor outlet for lighting and a pond pump.

The front door was a whole lot of whole crap. After removing the existings door we found the sill threshol wasn't supported by anything. Part of the floor in front of the door was rotten. It was my nightmare. I have little to no remodeling experience. Thankfully my father in law figured out how to extend the joist to incled the door frame. I can to Menards three or four times that day. It's a 20 minute drive each direction. I had lots of time to panic.

Hmm what else? Oh we converted the plumbing for the washing machine that had been in the kitchen for a dishwasher. Yet because of cash we don't actually have a dishwasher. And while we tried to keep the dishwasher space standard it is slightly smaller then standard 24 inches, like 23 3/4 or something technical like that. So it isn't something I am in a hurry to get.

Just recently we built a platform for the plastic garden shed. Unfortunately it sat on the uneven group d long enough to get warpwd. And we may have to completely disassemble to get everything to line up and the doors to close proper.
I've wanted a fire pit since we moved in. It took a while to decide. Then I decided we didn't have the money. This spring I decided I was tired of waiting. Dreaming I wanted a brick patio style fire ring with bricks and eventually enough bricks to set chairs around. This spring I couldnt afford any bricks, I scavenged 4 from around the yard and bought the cheapest fire pit Menards sold. A few weeks ago I was able to buy 12 more bricks to increase my patio. You might recall the wood patio next to the house, it is rapidly deteriorating. And I find myself sitting near the fire rather than risk stepping through the plywood. 12 square patio bricks coats approximately $30. I should be able to get another set soon.

The garden is a wild jungle. We don't care for the woody green bean variety I planted. And I planted a lot like 1/4 of a pound of seed. Glad the seed is gone, we can get aomesomet new next year. I should dig the potatoes. The tomatoes are doing okay, I haven't supported them enough. But the few that have ripe are delicious. It's the carrots I'm waiting for. I've been careful to keep the weeds down.

Finally cats. Our cat passed away shortly before we moved into the house. I was sad but busy. We decided quickly that it would be best not to get another animal. I've been content with my aquariums. After our kitchen remodel going over budget, we cancelled all our plans. Mostly two reenactment camping trips and any extra trips involving car travel. One of the local cat rescue put out a plea for foster homes, they had an excessively large bunch of kittens. I said yes! They supply everything, I jutj peovpro space, shelter and love. Then the cat goes on it's way to it's forever home. Richard and I shook hands agreiagr NOT to keep a cat. We like to travel spontaneous.
Little did I know 6 weeks later(now) we would still have the three cats in our care. The shelter is full and doesn't have space to even care for these cats while we go on vacation. Needless to say I am a bit frustrationed. I guess I just didn't look long term enough. Anyway they will getting out of my house while we go on our Northern Minnesota, northshore, family camping trip.
That being said I have a bunch of things to share with everyone.
First we turned the house upside down to carve out bedroom space for the children. The house hasn't really recovered. Now they have a bedroom with separate beds. Our bedroom is half storage room. Both rooms function and that's the important part.

Other exciting remodeling news to come soon!!
Goal is to finish blogging these exciting updates this weekend. ❤️
I need a place to place a bunch of pictures of a table loom I'm selling. Craigslist is horrible. I unsuccessfully try to sell my fish tank. The only interested parties were scammers. Seriously I'm not sending you my bank information for a $200 item.

Anyway. This is a table look that I used briefly. I don't have time or space for a big project like this. It can make narrow cloth, such as dish cloths or reenactment clothes.
Pictures tell all.
I love my Aquarium garden the big tank is just in the way. The fishes are just doing okay. I really wanted the gold and black ones to breed. But they just seem to eat. I lost a bunch last month. And the fish just haven't seemed to recover.

Without the tank and stand it would really open up the dinning room. Kids love to play and run. Winter here is long. We got 6+ inches of fluffy snow on Tuesday and now again on Friday. So the little bit of extra room would be nice.

I've made the decision to sell the tank. I'm not in a super hurry. It's kinda sad. But I know I can always get another tank used when we have more space.
Also I still have the two little tanks. I won't be with out fishes.camhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02658774680799387986noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1499260756247195599.post-10240143760068215532018-02-09T08:42:00.000-08:002018-02-09T08:42:31.879-08:00New doorsWOW Its been too long since posting. Sorry everyone.

We did a thing! The laundry room has a door! We found a great sale on these door hardware. We just reused the old doors. Eventually, probably before we move new door slabs will be used. I intend to paint the whole room and doors. Trim around the door ways needs attention and we need to figure out door latch hardware for the bathroom. Unfortunately now I need to figure out a new place to hang our coats, since we can't hang them on the doors and still open hem all the way. That or I need to move my large Aquarium. Good thing I don't have to figure it out instantly.
I'm very excited to be able to walk into the bathroom without going around the door. The whole room feels so much bigger. Hopefully soon we will get the new laminate flooring and some paint.camhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02658774680799387986noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1499260756247195599.post-3179951025351574722017-10-26T08:45:00.001-07:002017-10-26T08:45:23.102-07:00Clothing the constant shufflingI've never been good at organization. My clothes especially. I've always had boxes of out of season or sentimental items. Yesterday I unpacked the last, I hope, box of my clothing. In an effort to eliminate the 'storage' box, I hung, tossed or chopped the stuff. Sentimental t-shirt got chopped up for rags and the picture part was carefully cut for a future quilt top.
Now if doing all my clothes wasn't bad enough I have two kids and a husband. Kids have been easy as I started a 'no keep or save for future kid's rule from birth. I also politely decline most hand-me-downs from family and friends. I just can't deal with sorting or storage. I saved adult size shoe box of A baby clothes and V does have a big tote from my mother of my old dresses. So my rule isn't hard or fast. It is frustrating to feel constantly dealing with everyone clothing. Not to mention towels, sheets and blankets (which I honestly admit we have large numbers)

Anyway I switched dressers with husband and kids. Unfortunately the old kids dresser never lived up to it's usefulness. Leaving a sad husband without. The new closet works great for shirts and pants, but socks and unders need a home., Not to forget our wool base layers we love in the winter.

So far a solution hasn't presented itself. Semi permeant Ikea bags of clothes still decorate the closet. More in number and more sturdy hangers are still needed to get the winter gear (heavy coats, bibs, coveralls and snow pants) out of totes. Money is tight and I will just have to use what we got. Typically I can come up with something. Maybe the kids dresser will get used after all. Who knows. Back to shuffling!camhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02658774680799387986noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1499260756247195599.post-85179775463389592722017-10-13T09:40:00.003-07:002017-10-13T09:40:19.555-07:00Closet nearly done! The closet laundry room is finally functional. I installed the closet rods last week and am in the process of moving our clothes back in. We'll be leaving one high up closet rod in the storage room for winter coats and other less used gear. We are thinking about replacing the wide chunky trim thought out the house. So I didn't put it back into the closet laundry room.
Here is the sneak peek picture. Eventually I'll get a pretty all organized picture but not today.
We spent a very busy weekend working on the closet. We tore out lath and plaster. Found unique wood shavings as insulation. Added plumbing. Put up sheetrock. Installed a new bathroom light fan combination. Took measurements for a potential new front entrance way that would add a much needed coat closet and draft free front door. Whew that's a lot to do. I didn't include the three parts runs and much needed pizza break.

My internet access is limited. So I'm going to dump these photos of our makeover with little explanation. Pictures are worth a thousand words, right? The room isn't 100% but close and functional.
Last weekend we emptied the large closet in the house. This is in fact the only closet in the house. It had shelves and two odd hanging rods. We even put a dresser in there. But it just wasn't a good use of space. The closet shares a wall with the bathroom, the access panel for the tub and shower.
Now I never expect renovation to be easy, simple or straight forward. This time was no exceptions. We found under two layers of mosaics linoleum and tarpaper and some other paper stuff glued down tight. Mold and rot in the corner. Not surprised at all. There is suspicious evidence that perhaps maybe the room was at one long time a bathroom. Yikes it would have been small. Oh well we hope to repair the floor, probably replacing the sub floor with new plywood and then put a laminate tile on top. That's the plan. My expert father in law is coming this weekend to give advice. Not sure we'll get it all done. Since we are putting a vent fan in the bathroom and measuring for a front entry way.

So here are the before pictures. Enjoy your weekend!
I have my phone and a small data plan. Not much else. Library is free WiFi. Other places too. Just have to adjust my habits.

Garden is starting to grow. A bunny rabbit ate half my long rows of beans. The rose bush is blooming. The Peonies are blooming. Things are growing. I go out daily and water and weed.
We got the whole big spot tilled. Big tiller, dug it all up nice and deep. Funny how small interaction can have a big impact. We learned the neighbors garden outside of town, putting in a half acre of veggies and another half acre of just of sweet corn. The wife, retired, puts most in the freezer but also cans salsa and beans. She offered us extras for when as she put 'i get sick of picking'. Very nice couple. The husband offered to till the garden again in the fall.
Last weekend we knew there would be lots of rain focast (indeed there was) I planted two long rows of parsnips, sweet corn, one of Bush beans, a short row of small pumpkin, a row of dry beans, swish chard, turnips, and the garlic, and also bunch of spinach.
Still yet to plant are the carrots and Basil. I had couple cucumbers, one yellow squash and sunflower seed ling's that I put in the end of the garden beds. Oh and the peas we put in super early are coming up cherily.
Other flower beds are growing up strong. We took a road trip to Kansas to visit friends. We lived together for a few months three years ago. It was hot and miserable as everyone got sick. But I got a bunch of plants to add to my beds. Irises, daylilies, purple cone flower, black eyed Susan are some of the perennials. Oregano, three kinds of mint, are the edibles. Plus some others I can't remember. But my flower beds are filling in and looking great.
R even told me he really seriously enjoys my tanks in the house. Likes looking at them. And he told me he doesn't mind helping me build parts and pieces to go with the tanks. Even said someday he wants an aquaponic system to raise peppermint and bluegills fish. Tea and supper.

Last weekend I got the opportunity to go to an event held by the Minnesota Aquarium Society in Bloomington MN. I took my youngest daughter and an old friend. A real treat to leave our big kids at home with dads.
It was the Society annual auction. All sorts of things dealing with the hobby. Tanks, fish, equipment, aquatic plants. Everything you could want or dream about. The event was free, held in a large church gym. Very clean and well run. I was having so much fun bidding and general entranced by all the activities I didn't take any pictures.

However I did pick up some very neat cat fish. Corydoras variety called "Sterbi" I've been drooling over pictures on the internet. They are just neat looking both spotted and striped, with orange fins. Corydoras can certainly very shy fish. My new ones are in a quarantine tank for a few weeks before putting them in my big tank. It is fun because in the smaller space I can see them much better.
Tiny House, Big Garden

Earth Day 2017. We spent as much time outside as I could handle with the kids. Weeks ago when we were still getting hard frost, we staked out the side yard for the garden. Now we are busy removing the grass sod to make our garden. I'm finding clever places to put the sod. Filling in low spots in the yard. Can't hurt, R says the worst will be the lawn mower will kick up dirt if the sod doesn't grow. With way the low spot will be a little more filled. I try to get outside to remove the sod a little everyday. It is a big task. After all the sod is gone we have a tiny tiller that R thinks he can get running. The soil seems to drain well and is on the sandy side. Compost would be helpful and I will get some from the city when I figure out how to haul it.

It is interesting to watch my flower beds around the house. The renter clearly dug up most of the perennials. However she missed some. The tulips are easy to identify but until the rest get bigger I can only guess. I recall seeing day lilies but that's about it. As I didn't pay much attention. The tulips got disturbed and don't seem to be bluming this year. In fact all the perennials that are coming up are much slower then my neighbors. Maybe mine know that there will be one last snow storm or something.

I maybe should trim down the big tall one but it had buds all along the stem. We'll just have to wait and see. I wonder what color the flowers it will have? There were rose hips from last year on the ground.

Here you go. Rarely is it this clean, I try but end up baking and get flour everywhere. Or life happens. Dishes - I'm making a resolution to wash and put away every day regardless of how many or few. We have had a dishwasher in the past, but honestly I'm just lazy.

I noticed something new in my front flower beds, bulbs are sprouted. Tulips I'm guessing. Renter must have forgotten them. It will be fun to see what they turn out to be.
A viral crud has gone round and round. I haven't felt much like doing anything. March weather hasn't helped, most of the days are gray cheerless. But a few projects have gotten done here and there.

Library corner of the living room got organized.

The kitchen got a couple much needed additions. First R turned a tall odd cupboard that the prior renter used for trash can and broom holder into a much need pantry space. He measured and cut me shelves. Specific to the height of Mason jars and a tall space on the bottom to house my big pressure canner.

Beginning. This is located between the fridge and back door.

The new pantry! With room for my canner on the bottom.

I'm very happy to have this pantry. I try to meal plan for two or three weeks, a whole month is my goal. So having a stocked pantry is key. Also I can can garden produce this year. Last couple years I haven't done very much canning due to lack of space and moving. This year we'll pay for our CSA produce share and try our own garden. Either way I should have lots of veggies to can.

The microwave got its own shelf! With extra room to store cookbooks. This allows for more counter space for meal prep. I'll try and get a whole kitchen picture next time it is cleaned.

Now on to the living room. R put up the two shelves in the corner above my desk, printer specifically. But I needed more shelves for books as the library corner is full. Little A is growing up fast loving to read. Both R and I want to dig out our favorite childhood books. More space, more shelves.

After poking around outside I was happy to discover the renter didn't take all the perennials. When we bought the place it was written in the contract that none of the perennials would be included. Yep the renter dug them up in November and took them with. All the flower beds around the house are dug up and empty. Looks dreary now come spring I'll fill them. BUT I found some she missed or left. They are in a big bed in the middle of the side yard. Too early to tell what they are. Our plan is to expand that area into a extra large garden.

That's all I got for now. Happy spring everyone.

We have a back yard! Our snow is gone. The whole yard is greenish brown. This is not normal for west central Minnesota. I am not happy. Dispite the warm temperatures I cannot garden or start seeds until the end of March at the earliest. I am happy to have the cement slab where we can park cleared of snow and ice. And we found the patio. It is made from pallets covered in the cheapest plywood. It desperate needs a few coats of paint. Again not a February task. So I sigh and whine and complain about our lack of snow.
Before we moved in the renter had a full size washer in the kitchen and a full size electric dryer in what we use a a bedroom. Renter used the room as storage and for the dryer. The house didn't come with the appliances. We are used to apartments have a medium sized apartment washer and wooden dryer racks. I'd hoped for a full size washer but it's too much to justify when our apartment sized one works.
The tiny house came with a extra large outdoor clothing line. So this is how I dry clothes. After washing I sort quickly into outside freeze drying clothing and inside hang dry. Undies and kids clothes get hung inside. It is important to hang the outside clothing neatly. So as I pull it out of the washer I untwist any half inside out clothing and lay it neatly in my laundry bag- aka an Ikea bag. This way there is less fumbling with cold fingers outside. When hanging out side in winter make sure the laundry doesn't touch. Summer you can skimp on cloths pins, not in winter. The little fold where the close pin holds the laundry won't dry. It will be a tish frozen when you bring it inside. The clothing tends to start freezing right away it's cold outside. Im always hurry to keep my fingers warm. Once the clothing freezes it is stiff and won't blow around. I watch for when it less stiff and wiggling on the line in the wind. That is how I know it is dry. When I bring it inside I let it sit for a bit to warm up. That's when I know for sure if it is completely dry or sometimes there is a damp spot usually a wrinkle - then it gets hung up inside.
I could hang everything inside on my wood racks but the tiny house doesn't have any vent fans. A summer project for bathroom and kitchen. So we try to avoid extra humidity build up to avoid mold.

Now for pictures of what I'm talking about.
It went surprisly smoothly. There are boxes stacked everywhere. Below are some pictures of the mess. I purposely took these early this morning. The dark helps lessen the clutter. Plus my fairy lights look neat. Can't wait to get proper hooks to put them neatly around the corner where the ceiling and wall meet.
I hope you enjoy following the progress of our move into the small house. Pictures will document the progress little by little as we settle in. Yes we anchored the book cases to the walls. Our littlest V is a climber and we don't want any accidents.

With all the extra help around. I got my first chance to go down into the root cellar crawl space. I admit to being a tish disappointed. They just dug out the crawl space. One corner has bricks and wood shelves. An old table and the water heater lives down there. I put a few Christmas ornaments boxes down there. I'll be reading up on root cellar things and get back to everyone.
I've been letting A use my phone to watch kids videos during nap time while I cleaned or cooked. Suddenly I realise it has been a week living here. Lots has been happening.

Right hand burner covered in baking soda. My scorched pot. Thankfully nothing was ruined.

Fire! Yes we had a stove fire. The stove was gross drip pans needed replacing but with everyone sick I hadn't gotten to replacing them. Made lunch and they would smoke. Didn't think much of it, I cook everything from scratch sometimes things get on the burner. Well I walked out to check on baby V, while A walked into look out the back door. He came running "mom there is fire!" Yep there were flames licking the top of my covered pot. I quickly grabbed the baking soda and dumped a bunch on the fire. Baking soda quickly smothered the fire. I always keep some near the stove. What really got me was none of the smoke alarms went off! We knew we had them but hadn't checked them. Sure enough none worked, one didn't have batteries and both were very expired.
Needless to say, Go check your smoke detectors. We went and bought new ones for the whole house. Great part is the new ones have a hush butter for when I'm roasting veggies and the hot oven triggered the alarm. No more pulled off the wall or worse removed battery.
We'll be in the process of finding a new stove as soon as possible. I hate this stove. I've cleaned it to an inch of its life and threatening spoon waving. Hopefully we (stove and I) are on the same page and no more fires. Tryed on Thursday but my favorite salvage resale store run by habitat for humanity didn't have any eletric coil stoves. No glass top for me with all the canning I love to do. A gas stove will be in the future when we completely redo the kitchen. We are in the house. Kids and I moved in two days ago. And promptly everyone got sick, the furnace was glitchy and needed repairs. And we don't have any furniture just our beds. It has been exciting to say the least. Thankfully the furnace only needed a basic maintenance.

On to the pictures: our floors are done, frosty windows and living small.
